Krāslava ( German Kraslau, formerly Kreslau, Polish Krasław) is a city in southeastern Latvia on the Daugava . In 2016 Krāslava had 9114 inhabitants.
history
The square, a castle hill on the Düna - Dnepr waterway , was inhabited as early as the 9th century. In the sagas of the Vikings , the place appears as "Dynasaiforgarðr".
The Order of the Brothers of the Sword took the place in 1209. However, the King Visvaldis of Jersika initially got the place back as a fief.
After the Livonian War , the area came to Poland-Lithuania in 1580 and was owned by the von Plater family for a long time . A Jesuit school was established in the 17th century . In 1729 the place received market rights.
The Catholic Church of Kraslava became the bishopric and there was also a synagogue . After the partition of Poland in 1772, the city came to the Vitebsk Governorate . The Riga – Vitebsk railway line has crossed the city since 1865 . From 1870 there was a spa around some sulfur springs. In 1920 Krāslava became part of Latvia and in 1923 received city rights.

Krāslavas novads
Until 2009 there was the Krāslava County. As of 2001, 11 surrounding communities merged with the city to form an administrative unit. In 2010, 19,811 residents were registered.
