The power plant Aghada ( English Aghada Power Station , Irish Stáisiún Cumhachta Átha Fhada ) is a gas-fired power plant in County Cork , Ireland , which is located at Cork Harbor about 15 km southeast of the city of Cork .
The power plant went into operation in 1980. It is owned and operated by the Electric Supply Board (ESB) and is also operated by ESB.
Data
With an installed capacity of 963 MW , Aghada is the most powerful power plant in Ireland (as of July 2016).
Power plant units
The power plant consists of 3 plants that went into operation in 1980 and 2010 respectively. The following table gives an overview:
investment | block | Max. Power (MW) | Start of operation | turbine | generator | Steam boiler |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 258 | 1980 | ||||
2 | 1 | 90 | 1980 | |||

2 | 150 | 04.2010 | Alstom | Alstom |
Plant 1 consists of a conventional, natural gas-fired steam power plant with a maximum output of 258 (or 270) MW.
Plant 2 consists of three gas turbines with 90 MW each.
Plant 3 consists of a combined cycle power plant with a maximum output of 430 (or 435) MW. The costs for plant 3 were € 360 million . The efficiency is given with approx. 59%. Plant 3 can cover approximately 8% of the electricity consumption in the Single Electricity Market (which includes both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland) at full load .
Others
The power plant is supplied with gas through a 10 (or 12) km long pipeline operated by the operator Bord Gáis Eireann .
