The Fortuna power plant ( Spanish planta hidroeléctrica Fortuna ), also called Edwin Fabrega power plant , is located in the west of Panama in the Chiriquí province . The dam of the power plant dams the Chiriquí river . The reservoir she created is located in the Reserva Forestal (De) Fortuna protected area .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure consists of a CFR dam originally 60 m high, which was increased to 98 m from 1992 to 1994. The maximum height of the dam is also given as 100 or 105 m. The length of the crown is 600 m.

Reservoir

At full back , the reservoir holds 172.3 million cubic meters of water.

power plant

With an installed capacity of 300  MW - this corresponds to 23% of the generation capacity in Panama - the power plant is Panama's largest hydropower plant . The average annual production is given as 1.661 billion kWh. The generation of the Fortuna power plant fluctuates, however: it was z. B. in 2002 at 1.9433 billion kWh and in 2003 at 1.4037 billion kWh.

When the power plant was commissioned in 1984, two machines with a maximum output of 100 MW each were installed, and the third machine followed the following year. The machines' Pelton turbines were supplied by Kvaerner and the associated generators by BBC .

The machines are located in an underground machine house 430 m below ground, which is about 8 km from the dam. The water is first passed through a 6 km long tunnel with a diameter of 5 m and then flows through a 1.4 km long and 3.6 m wide penstock to the machine house. The height of fall is 765 m. From there it is returned to the river via an 8 km long tunnel.

The Pelton turbines with a vertical shaft and five nozzles each have a nominal speed of 514 / min. The associated generators have a nominal generator voltage of 13.8 kV. The substation is above the machine house on the surface. Two 230 kV lines lead from him to Panama City .

owner

The following companies are named as owners and operators of the power plant: Instituto de Recursos Hidráulico y Electrificación (IRHE) or Enel Fortuna SA According to this source, the Fortuna power plant was built by IRHE, but 49% of the shares in the power plant were sold in 1998. This 49% was then acquired by Enel in 2006 .

According to BNamericas, Enel Fortuna has the following owners: the company Enel (share via Enel Investment Holding 50.06%), the state of Panama (49.9%) and the employees of IRHE (0.04%).

The construction costs for the Fortuna power plant were $ 532 million. Enel Fortuna's 2011 revenue was $ 185 million and after-tax income was $ 45 million, which is $ 0.45 per share. In 2007 and 2008 it was $ 0.37 and $ 0.70 per share, respectively.

Others

The company Enel Fortuna has 300 MW of installed capacity the second largest electricity producer in Panama to AES Panama.

In 2013, the network operator Empresa de Transmisión Eléctrica SA (Etesa) awarded the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht the contract to build a third transmission line from the hydropower plants on the Chiriquí River to Panama City . The line will have a length of 320 km and a transmission capacity of 800 MW. It is said to cost $ 234 million.

A wind farm is to be built in the Reserva Forestal (De) Fortuna protected area , which will include 75 wind turbines with a capacity of 2 MW each. The estimated cost is $ 253 million.
