The power plants Riedersbach I and Riedersbach II are fossil-thermal thermal power plants in Riedersbach (municipality of St. Pantaleon ) in Upper Austria . The Energie AG Upper Austria operating the power plants mainly in the winter as a replacement for injured hydroelectric power. They delivered around 830 GWh per year.
Riedersbach I was built in the years 1967–1969 and Riedersbach II, with an approximately five times higher annual output, from 1981 to 1986. The chimney, designed as a reinforced concrete construction, is 191 m high and has a base diameter of 20.5 m. The aim was to avoid the construction of an expensive flue gas desulphurization system , which after years of public protests finally had to be built. Originally the power plant was operated with locally mined, sulphurous lignite from the Salzach-Kohlenbergbau-Gesellschaft (SAKOG) in neighboring Trimmelkam . In 1994 it was converted to burn hard coal . Biogenic additional fuels are also burned in small quantities.
The chimney of the power plant is visible from afar due to its height and is a scenic landmark for many kilometers.
A planned conversion to a gas and steam power plant (CCGT) was stopped for economic reasons. Thus, Riedersbach II was also shut down in 2016 after the coal reserves were exhausted. Riedersbach I will be converted to two natural gas hot water boilers with 13 MW to supply district heating to the communities of Ostermiething and St. Pantaleon.
