The Rostock power plant is a coal -fired power plant on the eastern edge of the city of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It is operated by the Kraftwerks- und Netzgesellschaft mbH (KNG) . The power plant construction began in June 1991. On September 20, 1994 the power plant was put into operation and on October 1, 1994, continuous operation began.

Technical specifications

The power plant Rostock features at a rated thermal input of 1370  megawatts by an electrical gross capacity of 553 MW and a net output of 514 MW. Up to 1650 tons of steam per hour are produced for the steam turbine. The grid connection is made via the Bentwisch substation at 380 kV maximum voltage level in the power grid of the transmission system operator 50Hertz Transmission .

The power plant is designed for district heating extraction of up to 300 MW, of which approx. 150 MW have been realized so far. The city of Rostock gets around 30% of its district heating from the coal-fired power station.

According to the operator, the power plant has an electrical efficiency of 43%. If the residual heat is also used for district heating (300 MW), the operator specifies a maximum efficiency of 62.0%, with the previously realized district heating use of 150 MW, the efficiency according to the operator is 52.6%.

The hard coal comes mainly from the Kuznetsk Basin in southern Siberia , which is delivered by ship across the Baltic Sea.

The cooling tower (total height 141.5 m) is also used as a chimney, the flue gases are fed into the steam plumes above the irrigation level . When the flue gas is desulphurized , gypsum is a waste product.

Emission of pollutants and greenhouse gases

In addition to the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide ( CO 2 ), the combustion of hard coal produces gaseous pollutants such as nitrogen oxides ( NO x / NO 2 and N 2 O ) and sulfur oxides ( SO x / SO 2 ). In addition, large amounts of fine dust are emitted, which u. a. Nickel ( Ni ), arsenic ( As ) and mercury ( Hg ) adhere.

The Rostock coal-fired power plant reported the following emissions in the European PRTR pollutant register :

Kraftwerks- und Netzgesellschaft mbH

The power plant and grid mbH , today's operator of the power plant, was founded in the 1990th She was responsible for the planning and construction of the power plant in Rostock's overseas port . Shareholders today are the companies:

  • EnBW (50.4%, stake was taken over by E.ON with effect from January 1, 2010 )
  • Rheinenergie AG (49.6%, stake was taken over by Vattenfall Europe [until then 25%] and RWE Power [until then 24.6%]) with effect from February 1, 2011 )

RheinEnergie AG has founded the subsidiary RheinEnergie HKW Rostock GmbH, based in Cologne, for its business with the Rostock coal-fired power station. RheinEnergie AG sells the proportion of electricity through its subsidiary RheinEnergie Trading GmbH. So far, the participation in the Rostock power station has been in deficit for RheinEnergie AG, which has to pay for the losses due to a profit and loss transfer agreement.
