The Theiss power station in Gedersdorf , Lower Austria , with location in Cadastral Tisza, with stand 2012, the most powerful thermal power plant of EVN AG with a nominal output of 800  MW . It consists of two blocks, block A, commissioned in 1974, and block B, which was commissioned in 1976. In addition, three gas turbines are available in reserve. The third gas turbine, with 240 MW and a weight of 98 t, comes used from Norway, was completely renovated and lifted in on May 31, 2020. (ORF. AT 1.6.)

The chimney, which is shared by both blocks, is 135 meters high, making it the third highest chimney in Lower Austria. Natural gas is used as fuel . In the event of unforeseeable bottlenecks, heating oil can be used as an energy source for reasons of security of supply . The natural gas is supplied via the West Austria gas pipeline , the heating oil is delivered by transport ship across the Danube and stored in tanks.

District heating storage tank with 50,000 m³ content

On January 11, 2008, Europe's largest district heating storage facility to date, with 50,000 cubic meters of water as the working medium, went into operation there. A tank with a diameter of around 50 m, which was previously used for oil, had been thermally insulated and converted. The calculation of the design for an optimal temperature stratification was carried out using the Richardson number . The district heating network Krems and Gedersdorf of EVN Wärme supplies the city of Krems an der Donau and the communities of Gedersdorf and Grunddorf with heat from the Theiss power plant .

In addition, since the nuclear phase-out decided in 2011, the reserve (gas) turbines have also been used as reserve capacity for the German electricity grid, which means that peak electricity can be produced at the request of the transmission system operator.

The Theiss substation is located on the site of the power plant, which has a network coupling transformer between the 380 kV and 110 kV level with a transformer output of 300 MVA.
