Krešimir Pavelić

Krešimir Pavelić (born July 19, 1952 in Slavonski Brod ) is a Croatian molecular biologist and cancer researcher , former Secretary General of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in Heidelberg and head of the Croatian National Cancer Research Program. His research includes work in the field of molecular medicine, especially hereditary cancers. For several years he and his team have also been researching natural products and pharmaceuticals as well as possible applications of the natural mineral zeolite - clinoptilolite .

Life

He graduated from the University of Zagreb with a degree in medicine at the age of 23 and graduated two years later with a Master of Science degree from the Center for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Zagreb. In the 1980s he did research in oncology , microbiology and diabetes mellitus in Zagreb and New York . From 1991 to 2007 he conducted research at the Ruder Bošković Institute in Zagreb, where he set up the Institute for Molecular Medicine; he was its director from 2003 and worked in the areas of oncology, genome research and proteomics. From 2008 to 2013 he was Secretary General of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). Since 2009 he has been director of the Institute of Biotechnology at the University of Rijeka .

Act

In 1994 Pavelić was involved in the establishment of the Eastern and Central European Human Tumor Bank network and since 1997 he has been the head of the National Cancer Research Program of the Republic of Croatia. His main research area is in the area of ​​cell mutations and autocrine tumor growth through insulin-like growth factors. He also researches the use of somatostatin in anti-tumor therapy and ion exchangers (zeolites) in medicine and cancer medicine. His expertise lies in the development of cancer drugs and genetic engineering in the field of tumor control. Pavelic has authored more than 300 scientific papers on these areas and published them in scientific magazines, some in renowned scientific journals such as Science and Oncology .

Functions

He is active in numerous international research associations at European level, was a member of the Standing Committee of the European Medical Research Council, the European Science Foundation (2004–2013), and President of the National Scientific Council of the Republic of Croatia (2007–2012) and member of the EMBO Council and the Council of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory.
