The Jerichower Land District Museum is a local history museum in the city of Genthin . With more than 25,000 exhibits, it is one of the largest museums in northern Saxony-Anhalt . It was opened in 1886 and moved to its current location in 1928, an Art Nouveau villa at Mützelstraße 22 near the train station. The building has thirteen exhibition rooms in which the history of the area between the Elbe , Havel and Fläming is presented. The museum has an outstanding prehistoric collection and a permanent exhibition on history from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. In addition, regularly changing special exhibitions are presented in two rooms.

Prehistoric and early historical collection

Urn depicting a horse

A comprehensive prehistory and early history exhibition is located on the first floor of the museum . The centerpiece is a collection of prehistoric finds from the area between the Havel in the western part of Brandenburg and the Elbe in Saxony-Anhalt, bought in 1929 by the Wusterwitz doctor and private collector Richard Stimming . Many finds, such as a grave urn from the late Roman Empire, come from Gallberg near Hohenferchesar in the city of Havelsee or many others from the Butzow district in Beetzseeheide . In total, the museum's prehistoric and early historical collection comprises around 8,000 exhibits. These include Mesolithic devices made of bones and antlers and grave goods such as fibulas .

Runestone

In the front garden of the museum, under its own roof, stands the Rogäsen rune stone , a supposed rune stone that was found in Rogäsen in the middle of the 19th century after a school fire . The inscription has not yet been deciphered or the stone has been dated. It has been in the Jerichower Land District Museum since 1928.
