geography

Butzow is located in the north of the Potsdam-Mittelmark district on the northwestern bank of the Beetzsee . It is due to the two basins of the elongated Rinnensee . To the south, Butzow borders on the municipality of Beetzsee with the district of Radewege . The municipal boundary runs over the northeast slope of the 58.8 meter high Hasselberg . Like the rest of the landscape, this is of Ice Age genesis. To the west the landscape rises slightly to the plateau of the Nauener Platte . The highest elevation in the Butzow district is the 77.2 meter high Butzower Berg , which belongs to a chain of hills that form the edge of the Marzahner Fenn , a glacier tongue basin that is characterized by the formation of bog.

history

A hanging vessel of the Havelländischen culture found in the district of Butzow am Hasselberg in the museum for prehistory and early history

On the Hasselberg on the border with the municipality of Beetzsee, one of the largest urn grave cemeteries in the Elbe-Havel area was secured from the later Roman Empire until the beginning of the migration period . Mostly, bowl-shaped urns without additions were found. The finds were dated to the 3rd to 5th centuries. In addition to these urn graves, other graves from the Stone Age were secured on Hasselberg , which were assigned to the Havelländische culture .

Butzow was first mentioned in a document as "Buzow" in 1207. In 1335, it and other villages along the Beetzsee, including Radewege, were obliged to take part in the maintenance of dams. Butzow was also mentioned in Charles IV's land register from 1375. The noble family von Brösicke , citizens of the old town Brandenburg and the cathedral monastery Brandenburg owned possessions in and around Butzow . The fishing rights for the Beetzsee owned the old town of Brandenburg in the 15th century.

In 1520 the elector sold the village of Butzow to the Brandenburg cathedral chapter, which already owned the places Mötzow and Grabow on the eastern shore of the lake. Butzow remained in church property until the 19th century. The brick industry established itself along the Beetzsee in the 19th century . The background was rich clay deposits and the connection to the Havel traffic route via the Beetzsee , so that inexpensive transport to the metropolis of Berlin was possible. In 1904 Butzow was connected to the German rail network via the Westhavelländische Kreisbahnen . Connections existed to the city of Brandenburg and Nauen . In 1969 the train service was stopped again.

Attractions

The village church of Butzow is a simple neo-Romanesque building from the 19th century. In the churchyard there is a memorial stone for the Soviet victims of World War II . The oldest house in the village is the monument at Dorfstraße 8 . This building is a two-story adobe half-timbered house that was plastered gray during the GDR era and was built before 1800.
