As Altmühl cross or cross in the Altmühltal one is late Gothic pillars bildstock on a stepped base in Gunzenhausen , a small town in Central Franconia district of Weissenburg-Gunzenhausen referred. The Altmühlkreuz is registered under the monument number D-5-77-136-218 as an architectural monument in the Bavarian monument list. The wayside shrine originally stood in the outskirts of Gunzenhausen at the confluence of the Am Pfahlrain path into Oettinger Straße, not far from Bundesstraße 13 and the Altmühl river that gives it its name .

In the Middle Ages , an important trade route ran along there. Today there is a copy of the Altmühl Cross. The original is in the courtyard of the Gunzenhausen town hall . The Altmühlkreuz is three meters high and made of sandstone .

Legends

There are many legends about the statue. According to the legend, the wayside shrine is said to have been built by Burkhard from the Seckendorffer family after he shot his beloved Hedwig there during the hunt.
