Kristina May (* 2. June 1987 in Toronto as Kristina Valjas ) is a Canadian beach volleyball player .

Career

As a teenager, Valjas was active in cross-country skiing and mountain biking . During her studies at the University of Toronto , she played indoor volleyball from 2005 to 2010 . During this time she also started playing beach volleyball. In 2008 she was third in the Canadian U21 Championship. A year later she was fifth in the national championship and joined Rebecca Moskowitz in Barcelona for her first open tournament on the FIVB World Tour . In 2010 she played three tournaments with Anastasia Danilova before completing the rest of the World Tour alongside Kacie MacTavish . In 2011 she started at the Open tournaments in China with Caleigh Whitaker . At the last tournament of the season in Phuket she was on the court with her new partner Jamie Lynn Broder . In 2012 Broder / Valjas played their first Grand Slam in Beijing . At the Open tournaments in Åland and Bang Saen they reached 17th place each. In 2013 they achieved a victory and a fifth place on the Continental Tour, before finishing ninth in the Fuzhou Open for the first time in the top ten on the World Tour. They also qualified for the 2013 World Cup in Stare Jabłonki . There they were eliminated after three defeats in the group games after the preliminary round. In 2015 they won the Fuzhou Open . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Broder / Valjas finished ninth. The two Canadians separated at the end of 2016.

In 2017 May formed a new duo with Taylor Pischke , who competed for the first time in the five-star tournament on the World Tour in Fort Lauderdale . At the three-star tournament in Moscow , Pischke / May reached the top ten for the first time in ninth place.

Private

May's ancestors come from Estonia . She has been married since October 2016. Her brother Len Väljas is a Canadian cross-country skier.
