Krokees ( Greek Κροκεές ( f. Pl. )) Is a small town on the Greek peninsula of Peloponnese . The municipality Krokees, which was independent until 2010, was merged with four neighboring municipalities to form the new municipality of Evrotas on January 1, 2011 , in which it has since formed a municipality. The small town of Krokees itself had 1175 inhabitants in 2011.

history

Krokees is located south of Sparta , between the Taygetos and Parnonas mountains . In the Bronze Age , Krokees was populated by the Achaeans and Pelasgians . Around the year 1100 BC The town came into the possession of the Dorians together with the rest of Laconia .

In ancient times, Krokees was famous for its beautiful forest green volcanic rock ( porphyry ), which is also known as Krokeatis Lithos ( Kroke stone ). Although this stone was very difficult to work with, it was often used as a material for vessels and vases. Public buildings such as bathhouses and later churches were also covered with it. Famous examples are the bathhouse of Corinth , the Hagia Sofia in Constantinople Opel and St. Paul's Church in the Vatican . The grave of the 300 Spartans who fell at Thermopylae was also made from the crocus stone.

The Dioscuri were the patron gods of the ancient city of Krokeai. A marble tablet of the Dioscuri that has been excavated adorns the fountain in the central square of the city.

Many professionals, scientists and artists come from this small town, including the famous Greek poet Nikiforos Vrettakos .

Under the name Levetsova (Λεβέτσοβα) the place was recognized in 1912 as a rural community (kinotita) and in 1927 initially renamed ( Katharevousa ) Krokee (Κροκεαί), in 1997 three neighboring communities were incorporated and Krokees were raised to a township (dimos) .
