The Kronprins Harald was a ferry of the Norwegian shipping company Jahre Line , which was put into service in 1961 and which began operations with this new building. It was used on the route from Oslo to Kiel until 1976 and then served under different owners and names in Vietnam and in the Mediterranean . After the ship was decommissioned in 1997, it was scrapped in Aliağa, Turkey , in 2005 .

history

The Kronprins Harald was built under construction number 1096 in the Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel and was launched on December 17, 1960. After the delivery to the Jahre Line on May 2, 1961, the commissioning on the route from Oslo to Kiel took place in the same month. The ship took about 19 hours to cross.

In 1974 the Crown Prince Harald was sold to the Vietnam Ocean Shipping Company, but remained in service for the years until April 1976. The Vietnamese owner then took over and renamed the ship Ha Long . In the same year, a new building of the same name took over the service from Oslo to Kiel . In 1979 the ferry was named Thong Nhat after it was sold to the Vietnam Coastal Shipping company. There it remained in use for another 12 years.

In 1991 the ship went under the name Panagia to the Orential Glory Maritime Company based in Malta . After renovation work, it was used in 1992 for the Afroessa Line on the route between Piraeus , Crete , Rhodes , Limassol and Haifa . In 1994 the Panagia went to Bodrum Lines as a charter ship, but was launched shortly afterwards .

The new owner in 1996 was the Honduras- based Global Union Maritime. From then on, the ferry operated under the name Al Safa in the Red Sea . After a year, however, the ship was launched again and changed hands again with the Med Cruise Maritime shipping company. The ferry, now called Medousa , was to be converted in Chalkis for further service, but this was never realized. Instead, the Medousa, anchored at the Chalkis Shipyard, was confiscated in 2003 after six years of berth . In May 2005 it was finally sold for demolition. On May 24th, the 44-year-old ship arrived at the Aliağa shipyard.
