Krugiodendron is a genus from the family of the Buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae). It is native to southern North and Central America and the West Indies and contains only two species.

description

Krugiodendrons are shrubs or trees, the leaves of which are arranged opposite or almost opposite. The flowers are axillary or terminal in cymes . Petals are missing. The disc lies in a ring around the base of the ovary . The fruits are stone fruits , the seeds lack an endosperm .

distribution

Krugiodendron is found from South Florida to Mexico, parts of Central America and the West Indies .

Systematics and botanical history

The genus was first described by Ignatz Urban in 1902 based on a species first described by Martin Vahl as Rhamnus ferrea in 1794 . The name honors the German botanist Carl Wilhelm Leopold Krug .

Krugiodendron was considered monotypical until the first description of a second species, Krugiodendron acuminatum , in 2003 by José González Ramírez and Luis Poveda Álvarez . However, the genus was previously considered to be in need of revision.

Krugiodendron is placed within the Rhamnaceae in the tribe Rhamneae . The genus contains two types:
