Krystana (Tanka) Iwanowa Janewa (also Krastana Iwanowa Janewa ; Bulgarian Кръстана Иванова Янева ) (born October 30, 1914 in Drama / Macedonia; †  October 23, 1944 in Halle (Saale) ) was a Bulgarian resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Janewa lost her parents as a child. She grew up with an aunt in Sofia and attended high school there. After graduating from high school, she studied pedagogy at Sofia University and became a member of the Bulgarian Communist Party . After graduating, she worked as a teacher .

After the invasion of Nazi Germany, which was allied with Bulgaria, she joined a group of partisans and was recruited by the Soviet secret service for special operations. Since she had already started to learn German during her studies, she was sent to the Berlin University to study in November 1942, where she was supposed to establish contact with the resistance groups around Harro Schulze-Boysen , Arvid Harnack and Bernhard Bästlein .

On April 27, 1944, she was arrested and imprisoned in Moabit Prison. After 15 months she was taken to the Barnimstrasse women's prison . On June 22, 1943, she was sentenced to death by the Reich Court Martial. She was then transferred to the Halle / Saale prison, where she was beheaded on October 23, 1944.

Janewa lived from 1942 to 1943 at Albrechtstrasse 14 in Berlin-Mitte , where a plaque commemorates her.
