Krzysztof Wilmanski (born March 1, 1940 in Łódź , Poland ; † August 26, 2012 in Berlin ) was a Polish-German physicist who researched in the fields of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics .

Scientific career

Krzysztof Wilmanski graduated from the T. Kosciuszko Gymnasium in Łódź in 1957 and studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Łódź until 1962 . In 1965 he received his doctorate there in the field of continuous modeling for discrete systems. In 1970 he completed his habilitation at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw (area: non-local continuum mechanics). For this work he was awarded the MT Huber Prize. In 1979 he was appointed professor by the Polish State Council . In that year he was also a Humboldt fellow in Germany. In 1984/85 he was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin . From 1996 to 2005 he headed the research group Continuum Mechanics at the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics in Berlin. From 2005 to 2010 he was Professor of Mechanics at the University of Zielona Góra . In 2006 he received the Lady Davis Prize at the Technion in Israel. He was also a faculty member of the ROSE School, Center for Post-Graduate Training and Research in Pavia .

Research priorities

  • axiomatic and kinetic foundations of continuum thermodynamics,
  • Mixture theory,
  • Phase transitions in solids,
  • Non-Newtonian fluids , for example thermodynamics of Maxwell's thermally conductive fluids
  • acoustic waves in continuity ,
  • Crystal plasticity and texture development,
  • Thermodynamics of porous materials and especially poroelastic materials with large distortion and modeling of porous materials with a balance equation for the porosity.
