The Kulm is an island mountain near Aigen in the Ennstal . It has a height of 918 m above sea level. A. and rises around 270 m above the valley floor of the Styrian Ennstal . It consists of paleozoic limestone bands and phyllites .
The Kulm is located in an important traffic situation between the Salzkammergut in the north and the pass routes over the Niedere Tauern in the south. For a long time it has been seen as the central location of the prehistoric Eastern Alps and thus the early salt trade .
Archaeological finds
Excavations in 1948/49 after a hilltop settlement from the Hallstatt period (from around 800 to 475 BC) were unsuccessful, and it was not until 2002 when forest roads were built on the northern slope of the Kulm that some grave fields were found. In addition to flat graves , the most northerly Hallstatt-era barrows in Styria were discovered. A settlement of the Kulm from the older Urnfield culture (from about 1300 to 800 BC) to the early La Tène period (480-380 BC) can be assumed. The graves can be assigned to the Sulmtaler and Calendar Mountain cultures; This is particularly indicated by the barrows, as well as two Kreuzatt pocket basins (Attasche, handle mounts on metal vessels) from apparently local production. In the late Hallstatt period , a beak- jug fragment and pottery- wheel-turned pottery can be classified, which, however, also point to a local production source due to their independent shape.
