Kumar Chokshanada Sangakkara (Sinhala: කුමාර් සන්ගක්කාර) (born October 27, 1977 in Matale , Sri Lanka ) is a retired Sri Lankan cricket player who was the captain of the Sri Lankan national cricket team between 2009 and 2011 . The left-handed player mainly played as a batsman (batsman) and as a wicket keeper .
Career
Sangakkara made his first appearance in international cricket at the age of 22 in July 2000 when he played an ODI against Pakistan . He won the first Man of the Match award in his second ODI when he scored 85 runs against South Africa . He made his test debut in the same month against South Africa. His first double century came in the 2002 Asian Test Championship Finals when he hit 230 runs. In 2009 he was appointed vice-captain of the national team when the previous captain Marvan Atapattu was injured. During a test in July of that year, he also achieved the highest run number of his career when he scored 287 out of 684 runs in a world record partnership with captain Mahela Jayawardene . Sangakkara was slightly injured in the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore in 2009, but was soon reinstated. A short time later he was promoted to captain. Under him, the team reached the final of the 2011 Cricket World Cup , after which he officially resigned from the captaincy. In 2012 he was named one of Wisden's Cricketer's of the Year. On August 24, 2015, Sangakkara ended his international career.
