Gonschior turned away from the informal , gestural position of his teacher Götz in the early 1960s . He dealt with perception phenomena and created color spaces with serial dots set with the brush. His pictures were created against the background of scientific test arrangements, "[...] but the picture statements are not a mere implementation of color-theoretical knowledge, they extend into a sensual sphere of action [...]", in which the viewer becomes an important part of the picture. From 1962 the artist used luminous paint , which he combined with a flat, narrow brush to create “shimmering” color structures.

At the end of the 1960s he also used these colors in complementary combinations. For example, in front of the background of the luminous color green, he placed red dots that were thickened and enlarged towards the center of the picture, thus creating flickering, spherical structures. In further pictures he reversed this test arrangement. The resulting "vibrations" (also the title of the work) do not be fooled like the Op Art the eye, but projected on the retina of the viewer irritating afterimages. In the mid-1970s, the artist extended his painting to the walls and floors using the panel painting and created colored phenomena for the viewer in the area between real space and illusionary space.

Works by the artist are in the possession of numerous public collections. In 1977 he took part in documenta 6 in Kassel, which Manfred Schneckenburger was responsible for. In 1999 he received the German Critics' Prize .

Kuno Gonschior was a member of the German Association of Artists . He lived and worked in Bochum.
