Michelangelo's Pietà

During his first stay in Rome, Michelangelo Buonarotti completed his Pietà as a commissioned work for the French Cardinal Jean de Villiers de la Grolaie, Abbot of St. Denis. The Pietà , which, as agreed in the contract with the Cardinal, will be installed in the Church of Santa Petronilla, is one of the most important works of Western sculpture and an outstanding example of the art of the High Renaissance .

Hypnerotomachia Poliphili : typesetting and illustration in print by Aldus Manutius, 1499

The novel Hypnerotomachia Poliphili appears in Italy. The author is a Francesco Colonna whose identity is controversial. The in Offizin of Aldus Manutius in Venice resulting pressure is still admired landmark of early art of printing. While the Gothic print letters used in incunabula up to then were based on the cursive script of medieval manuscripts ( Gothic minuscule ), the dream of Poliphilo is printed in typefaces developed shortly before by Nicolas Jenson in Venice, which are now known as Antiqua . The 172 woodcuts integrated into the text by an unknown artist are of masterful execution.
