Kurt Johnen (music teacher)

Kurt Johnen (born January 3, 1884 in Burtscheid , † February 26, 1965 in Quedlinburg ) was a German pianist , music teacher and music writer.

Live and act

Kurt Johnen attended grammar school in Aachen and from 1904 studied musicology at the University of Berlin and piano with Rudolf Maria Breithaupt . From 1908 to 1911 he was Rudolf Maria Breithaupt's assistant and studied at the University of Music . He then worked as a music teacher and piano accompanist . From 1922 to 1924 he also taught in Amsterdam and in 1925 began a scientific activity at the psychotechnical laboratory of the Technical University of Charlottenburg . In 1927 he was awarded a PhD with his work New Paths to the Energetics of Piano Playing. phil. PhD . He then did research at the Psychological Institute of the University of Berlin. In his scientific work he mainly dealt with occupational diseases of pianists, the psychology of music and in particular with the connection between rhythm and phrasing and physiological processes such as breathing and pulse .

In 1927 Kurt Johnen founded a music teacher training college, which he directed until 1945. In 1942 the seminar was merged with the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory . Kurt Johnen's students in Berlin included Marian Anderson (1931) and, on the piano, Beate Albrecht and Curt Sachs .

In 1945 Kurt Johnen moved from Berlin to Quedlinburg . There he and his wife founded a municipal conservatory in the Grünhagen house from their own resources , which in 1949 became the State Conservatory of Saxony-Anhalt . One of his students in Quedlinburg was Tilo Medek (1959 to 1962). From 1952 he had a teaching position for music at the Hochschule für Musik Halle and from 1955 a teaching position for the treatment of occupationally ill pianists at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" Berlin .

One of Kurt Johnen's best-known works is General Music , which first appeared in 1937. Several editions have been published since then. The 11th edition appeared in 1964 shortly before his death, from the 12th edition it was first edited and edited by Eberhardt Klemm , the 15th edition was revised by Carlferdinand Zech . The 24th edition was published in 2018.
