Kurt Leichtweiß (born March 2, 1927 in Villingen ; † June 23, 2013 ) was a German mathematician who dealt with geometry and especially differential geometry .
Leichtweiß studied mathematics and physics at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and the ETH Zurich . In 1951 he received his doctorate in Freiburg under Wilhelm Süss ( on the axiomatics of a topological foundation of the geometry of the plane and space ). In 1955 he completed his habilitation in Freiburg ( Cauchy's problem in multi-dimensional differential geometry ). In 1957/58 he received a grant from the German Research Foundation at the Sorbonne . He was then a private lecturer in Freiburg and from 1963 professor at the TU Berlin . From 1970 until his retirement in 1995 he was a professor at the Technical University of Stuttgart , where he was temporarily head of the Institute for Mathematics and Dean. Even after his retirement he remained scientifically active.
In addition to differential geometry, he also dealt with convex geometry .
His PhD students include Hermann Karcher (University of Bonn), Eberhard Teufel (University of Stuttgart) and Bernd Wegner (TU Berlin).
From 1966 to 1982 he led the geometry conference at the Mathematical Research Institute in Oberwolfach with Karl-Heinrich Weise , Peter Dombrowski and Konrad Voss .
He also edited the introduction of the differential geometry of the German doyen of differential geometry Wilhelm Blaschke for a new edition and he was co-editor of the collected works of Blaschke. In 1962 he gave a lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Stockholm ( About curvature theory of manifolds in the euclidean n-space ). In 1995 he received the Blaschke Medal.
