Live and act

Maiwald, son of a teacher, studied natural sciences and agriculture at the University of Wroclaw from 1920 and received his doctorate there in 1923 with a dissertation on the effects of high nutrient levels on the assimilation apparatus of the potato plant. In the fall of 1925 he went to Cornell University ( Ithaca , USA) for a year . On a long tour in 1926 he studied the organizational structure of scientific agriculture in the USA. In 1928 he completed his habilitation at the University of Wroclaw with the work Investigations on the determination and interpretation of the buffering capacity of soils with low carbonate content .

After four years as a private lecturer in agricultural chemistry at the University of Breslau, Maiwald accepted a call to the Hohenheim Agricultural University in 1932 , where he succeeded Margarete von Wrangell as full professor and director of the Institute for Plant Nutrition . He preferred to deal with problems of mineral fertilization, manure and humus management and soil analysis. In his publications he always endeavored to use correct terminology for the specialist agricultural terms. After the Second World War, Maiwald worked temporarily as a visiting professor and advisor to the Egyptian government in Cairo . From 1952 to 1954 he held the office of rector of the Hohenheim Agricultural University.
