Kurt Schiegl

Kurt Schiegl (born January 24, 1925 in Vienna , † July 22, 1984 in Toronto ) was an Austrian boxer and actor.

Life

The roughly 1.90 m tall heavyweight was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1943, but deserted into the Belgian underground. After the end of the war he began a professional career as a boxer and won his first fight on June 15, 1946 in Linz by knockout in the first round against Alois Kofler. In his second fight he lost to the later European champion Josef Weidinger , but won the rematch by disqualifying his opponent. In October 1948 he beat the Dutch master Jan Klein by knockout in the third round. Just a week later, he also won on points against Belgian champions Piet Wilde. In December 1948, he defeated the two-time EM challenger Paco Bueno from Spain prematurely in the third round.

On July 8, 1949, he boxed for the Austrian heavyweight championship against Hein Wiesner, but was subject to this on points. Against the strong Canadian Earl Walls, who had almost got a World Cup chance against Rocky Marciano , he lost by knockout in the first round. Against the German Wilson Kohlbrecher , he reached a draw in October 1950.

On August 3, 1951, he fought again against Hein Wiesner for the Austrian championship and this time was able to prevail on points. After losing points to Heinz Neuhaus in September 1951, he won eight fights in a row and boxed for the European Heavyweight Championship ( EBU ) in Frankfurt am Main on October 9, 1954 , but lost again to Heinz Neuhaus. In February 1955 he also suffered an early loss to Ingemar Johansson . After further defeats to the European champions Franco Cavicchi and Dick Richardson , he ended his career in July 1956. In his ten-year boxing career, he played 40 fights in Austria (24), the Netherlands (1), Belgium (4), Denmark (1), Great Britain (2), Germany (4), Sweden (1) and Italy (3), he emerged victorious 24 times, one fight ended in a draw.

Schiegl then emigrated to Canada, where he settled in Toronto, married twice and had three children. He also acted in several films and television series.
