Kurt W. Stasiak OSB (born October 9, 1952 in Rüdesheim am Rhein , Germany ) is an American Benedictine and Archabbot of the Archabbey of St. Meinrad in Spencer County , Indiana .

Life

Kurt Stasiak was born on October 9, 1952 as the son of German parents in Rüdesheim am Rhein. After his father died five weeks after he was born, his mother had to raise him and his two older brothers alone. Due to excessive financial demands, she gave the youngest child up for adoption. The US Air Force Officer Joseph W. Stasiak (1914–1999) and his wife Suzanne († 1988) stationed in Germany adopted the family and moved to the United States a little later. The Stasiak, who was baptized Lutheran in Germany, grew up Catholic in the United States .

He decided to join the Benedictine Archabbey of St. Meinrad, where he made his profession on August 15, 1975 . Over the years he held various offices in his monastery, St. Meinrad. From 1978 to 1981 he acted as administrative assistant to the so-called President-Rector. As early as 1980 he was elected Deputy Spiritual Director of the Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology and subsequently held this position for three years. From 1986 to 1990 he taught sacramental theology in the local School of Theology and was assistant to the novice master of the monastery. He was also Secretary to Archabbot Timothy Sweeney from 1986 to 1989, and Appointments Director of the monastery from 1986 to 1990 and 1992 to 1998. Overall, he taught sacramental theology and liturgical theology at Saint Meinrad Seminary and the affiliated university for a period of around 30 years (1986 to 2016) , mostly as a lecturer . For ten years he also served as the chief director of the spiritual formation.

He also chaired the Archabbey Church Renovation Committee from 1993 to 1997 and was Provost Vice-Rector of the School of Theology from 2005 to 2008 . As an author he has published numerous books such as Sacramental Theology: Means of Grace, Ways of Life , Return to Grace: A Theology for Infant Baptism or From Sinners to Saints: A Guide to Understanding the Sacrament of Reconciliation . He also published A Confessor's Handbook in 1999 , a handbook for confessors. He also wrote countless articles and book reviews in various other journals and publications. After the resignation of Archabbot Justin DuVall , Father Kurt Stasiak was elected tenth abbot and seventh archabbot of St. Meinrad on June 2, 2016. The Archbishop of Indianapolis , Joseph William Tobin , gave him on 26 July 2016 in the abbey church the abbatial blessing .
