Kurttila, who started for the Imatran Urheilijat , ran his first race in the Continental Cup in Kaustinen in January 1996 and came in 32nd place over 10 km classic. He made his debut in the Cross-Country World Cup in December 1999 in Engelberg , which he finished in 41st place in the sprint. In the same month he got his first World Cup points in Kitzbühel with the 24th place in the sprint. In the 2001/02 season he reached his first podium finishes in the World Cup with third place in the sprint in Oslo and second place in the sprint in Val di Fiemme . At the season highlight, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , he came in 25th place in the sprint. At the end of the season, he achieved 31st place in the overall World Cup and ninth place in the Sprint World Cup. In the following season he ran with two top ten placements, including second place in the sprint in Drammen , 37th place in the overall World Cup and 14th place in the Sprint World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 in Val di Fiemme , he achieved 15th place in the sprint. In the 2004/05 season he was twice in the top ten in the World Cup. He finished second in the sprint in Gothenburg and thus finished 29th in the overall World Cup and tenth in the Sprint World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf in 2005 , he was 15th in the sprint and together with Lauri Pyykönen in the team sprint. The following year he finished 23rd in the sprint at the Olympic Winter Games in Turin and fifth in the team sprint together with Lauri Pyykönen. In the 2006/07 season he reached 16th place and in the 2007/08 season 13th place in the overall ranking of the Scandinavian Cup . His best individual placement was fourth place in January 2008 in the sprint in Jõulumäe . He completed his last World Cup race in November 2009 in Kuusamo , which he finished in 71st place in the sprint.
