Kutless is a Christian rock band from Portland , Oregon (USA).
Band history
Singer Jon Micah Sumrall, guitarist Ryan Shrout, drummer Kyle Mitchell and bassist Nathan Stuart, who is originally from North Dakota, attended the same college in Portland and belonged to the same parish of Athey Creek . There they made music together, formed a band in 1999 and finally decided to leave school and pursue a music career. They added James Mead as fifth member and second guitarist and chose their band name. They traced it back to a quotation from the Bible: “ We wanted our name to express what Jesus achieved for us on the cross. Jesus took our pains and paid for our sins (Romans 6:23) He took our cuts, made us 'kutless'. "
They toured extensively and also gave benefit concerts for cancer patients and victims of domestic violence. At the end of 2001 they signed with BEC Recordings and shortly afterwards released their debut album, Kutless, named after the band . It was a success and hit the Christian album charts and laid the foundation for their popularity. Just two years later they made the breakthrough in the official album charts and a top position in the genre charts with the album Sea of Faces . In 2005 they were able to further increase their success with Strong Tower . The rankings were similar to album number 2, but this time they stayed in the Christian charts for over a year and a half and sold over half a million copies, for which they got gold . The title song stayed in the Christian singles charts for almost a year and reached number 4. In addition, the album and song received a nomination at the GMA Dove Awards , as did the band itself in the Group of the Year category .
After that, the line-up changes significantly. In addition to Stuart, who had already left in 2002, Shrout and Mitchell then left the band. For this purpose Dave Luetkenhoelter came as bassist, Jeff Gilbert as drummer and Nick DePartee as guitarist. Nevertheless, they had established themselves so successfully in the music scene that their success did not stop. The following four albums from 2006 to 2012 all reached number 1 or 2 in the Christian charts and made the top 100 of the official charts. In 2009 It Is Well stayed in the charts for almost a year and a half and brought them their only number 1 hit in the Christian single charts with the song What Faith Can Do. In 2012, Believer reached its highest position in the sales charts with 36th place.
Then the winning formation began to fall apart again. Again, only singer Jon Micah Sumrall and guitarist James Mead remained, the other three members said goodbye within three years. DePartee returned later, but only Kyle Peek came on as drummer and Kutless continued as a quartet. This time, however, the popularity began to decline sharply. The eighth studio album Glory missed the Top 100 in 2014, Surrender was only placed in the Christian charts the following year and Alpha / Omega was only poorly placed there in 2017 and only lasted a week.
