Outokumpu [ ˈɔu̯tɔkumpu ] is a city in eastern Finland with 6803 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is in the countryside of North Karelia on the border with Savo around 40 km north-west of Joensuu .

At the beginning of the 20th century, Outokumpu was a small village called Kuusjärvi. In 1913, a larger copper deposit was discovered and the place developed into the largest mining town in Finland. In 1968 the community was renamed Outokumpu after the mine, and in 1977 it became a town. The mining was stopped in 1989, the mine has now been converted into a museum. In order to cope with the structural change, Outokumpu had already started to establish industry ten years earlier. Today there are 50 industrial companies with around 900 employees in the city. The metal group Outokumpu was founded in Outokumpu , but it is now based in Espoo and has not produced in Outokumpu since the mine was closed.
