content

High school student Sakura Mamiya ( 真 宮 桜 ) has had the ability to see ghosts since a supernatural experience in her childhood. But this ability puts a strain on them, as most of the ghosts speak to and harass them. One day at school she meets Rinne Rokudō ( 六道 り ん ね , Rinne = " samsara ", Rokudō = " six realms of being "), who, half Shinigami , half human, is initially not noticed by the other students. This is due to the special coat, called " Yomi no Haori " ( 黄泉 の 羽 織 , dt. "Robe of the underworld"), which he wears and which makes him invisible to humans. Soon after, however, he appears at school without this coat and seems like a completely normal student.

In fact, Rinne has the task of bringing wandering spirits to the wheel of rebirth (samsara, wheel of life ), which then appears as a huge red wheel in the sky. This enables the spirits to leave the earthly world in order to be reborn. The fact that he has been in financial need since the death of his grandfather and has no permanent residence does not make this task any easier for him. His grandmother, a real Shinigami, once fell in love with a dying person, extended his life by 50 years and married him. As a price, she promised that her children and grandchildren would also serve the Shinigamis. Sakura begins to help Rinne with the banishment of the spirits into the afterlife and so a friendship develops between the two.
