history

The oldest finds were found at the Agios Ioannis Chapel, they range from the late Mycenaean ( SH III ) to the Classical period . The acropolis of this city was on the eastern Kastraki hill. A fortified upper town and the remains of a temple and a large portico were found here. A second acropolis was on the hill to the west. While it used to be assumed that the ancient opus was here , today it seems more likely that it was at today's Atalanti. The main occupation consisted of agriculture, viticulture, cattle breeding and pottery.

Early Christian ruins can be found east on the beach of Paliomagaza ( Greek Παλιομάγαζα = old workshops ). In the 10th century there was an economic decline due to looting. From 1204 until the conquest by the Ottomans in 1458, the Eastern Locris belonged to the Duchy of Athens . The foundations of a Franconian tower on the Kastraki hill have been preserved from this time. Gardenitsa were probably founded by Slavs in the 15th century . In 1466 the place had 77 inhabitants and 1506 105 houses. Osios David was probably born in Gardenitsa in 1519 . In 1521 there were already 126 houses and the tax to be paid was 8,503 Akçe . The number of houses was reduced to 96 in 1540 and the tax burden was 7,030 Akçe. In 1571 there were only 66 houses and 3,000 Akçe taxes.

The traveler Argyris Filippidis reported that Gardenitsa is identical to Kyparissi and, in 1815, consisted of 15 residential buildings that were exclusively inhabited by Christian families. After the establishment of the Kingdom of Greece , Kyparissi was assigned to the municipality of Atalanti in 1836. In 1838 13 families lived here and in 1879 there are 153 inhabitants. In the great earthquake of 1894, 4 of the 183 inhabitants were killed. In 1896 the place had 80 inhabitants and in 1907 91. In 1932 the village of Kyparissi was founded, which was previously part of the village of Tragana. The population increased from 1940 with 187 inhabitants to 242 in 1961 and 302 in 1991. In 1998, according to the Kapodistrias plan , the municipality of Kyparissi was assigned to the newly founded municipality of Atalanti and in 2001 had 291 inhabitants.

tourism

Several small chapels attract visitors to Kyparissi. There are also some cycling and hiking trails. The two beaches Armyra ( Greek Αρμυρά = brine ) and Paliomagaza, which are suitable for swimming, camping and fishing, are shared with Skala . In the lagoon, a wetland just behind Armyra Beach, you can spot various species of birds during the winter months.
