Leonardo Carrilho Baptistão , Léo Baptistão for short (born August 26, 1992 in Santos , São Paulo ) is a Brazilian football player . He also has an Italian and Spanish passport.
Career
Léo Baptistão's career began in his hometown of Santos , where he began - together with Neymar - to play football at the AA Portuguesa Santista . At the age of 16 he went to Europe and played there in the youth department of the Spanish capital club Rayo Vallecano . Shortly afterwards he fell ill with hepatitis and returned to his homeland because his father is a doctor. Back in Spain, he was awarded the CD San Fernando de Henares because the Spanish Football Association (RFEF) forbade him to return to Rayo immediately. In San Fernando , a municipality in the greater Madrid area, he stayed for a season and was then allowed to return to Rayo.
On August 25, 2012, he finally made his debut in the Primera División in a 2-1 away win against Betis Sevilla and was even in the starting lineup. In the 4-2-3-1 system of coach Paco Jémez he was subsequently seeded and acted either as a "ten" in the attacking midfield or as a center forward. He scored a total of seven goals over the course of the season and even scored twice against Espanyol Barcelona . In the final standings he finished eighth with Rayo and would have reached the UEFA Europa League due to the exclusion of FC Málaga from the international competition , but Rayo was refused the license for this competition.
In the summer of 2013, Baptistão moved from Rayo Vallecano to Atlético Madrid within the capital , where he signed a five-year contract. There he was the third striker behind David Villa and Diego Costa and was mostly used as a substitute. In his first Champions League game against Zenit Saint Petersburg , he made it 3-1 when he came on as a substitute with his first goal for Atlético.
In January 2014 Baptistão moved to Betis Sevilla on loan until the end of the season .
Baptistão only returned to Madrid for the 2014/15 season, but moved back to Rayo Vallecano on loan in mid-August 2014 .
For the 2015/16 season Baptistão was loaned out directly to Villarreal CF, for whom he scored three goals in 26 league games.
Baptistão moved to Espanyol Barcelona for the 2016/17 season . He received a five-year contract dated June 30, 2021.
