The Lühe (Lü) is a tidal river on the left Elbe in the district of Stade in Lower Saxony on the border of the first and second mile of the Old Country with a length of 12.7 km. She is a federal waterway of class I, on which the German Traffic Regulations applies. The Hamburg Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible .
It begins in Horneburg below the Au-Mühle (km 0.00), where the floodplain merges with the Landwetter and from here bears the name Lühe. At the mouth of the Elbe at km 645.43 near Grünendeich is the Lühe pier, where the Lühe - Schulau ferry stops. Today the Lüh estuary is important as a shelter and base for small ships - especially for pleasure craft.
In 1940 a storm surge barrier was built two kilometers above the estuary. A new barrier at the mouth of the main dike has been in operation since 1968; the ten meter wide opening is closed by mitred gates .
The typical Lühe dinghies and Lühe ewer used to operate on the river , which were used between 1910 and 1939 for the transport of fruit from the Altes Land fruit-growing area and other agricultural products.
