L'Express (actually L'Express et Feuille d'Avis de Neuchâtel ) was a French- language daily newspaper in Switzerland published in Neuchâtel and the oldest French-language newspaper worldwide. It was published by Société Neuchâteloise de Presse, which is majority owned by Groupe ESH Médias (Editions Suisses Holding SA) owned by Philippe Hersant, the owner of the Hersant Group . In January 2018 it was included in the new ArcInfo newspaper .

history

The weekly newspaper Feuille d'Avis , founded by François-Louis Lichtenhan in 1738 , and from 1766 Feuille d'Avis de Neuchâtel , has been published daily since 1884. In 1928 the circulation was already 13,000 copies. In 1964 it took over the Express, which was founded in 1891, and absorbed it in 1971, which was finally published as an evening newspaper. After that, the Feuille d'Avis de Neuchâtel operated under the acronym FAN-L'Express ( FAN for short ). On the occasion of the 250th anniversary, the FAN swapped the main and subtitles in 1988 and has been called L'Express et Feuille d'Avis de Neuchâtel ( L'Express for short ) ever since . Always independent ( Feuille d'avis = "advertising paper"), the newspaper tended to be conservative right up to the end. In 2017, the WEMF- authenticated circulation was 18,950 sold or 16,783 copies distributed, the reach 43,000 readers (WEMF Basic 2017-I).

In 1996, a close journalistic and technical collaboration between L'Express and its journalistic rival, L'Impartial («Der Unparteiische») , which appears in La Chaux-de-Fonds , began under a joint umbrella . In order to maintain the regional political balance between the “conservative lake” and “liberal mountains” and to smooth out the political waves that had raged at the beginning of the cooperation, the two regional editions not only continued to have their ancestral names, but also differed in the comments, apart from the local section cantonal affairs. The cover section and the production of the successor newspaper ArcInfo will continue to take place in Neuchâtel. Since February 7, 2007, the Le Journal du Jura , the daily newspaper for the Bernese Jura, published in Biel, has also been integrated as a header in the same way.

In 1999 the two Neuchâtel papers were merged into the Société Neuchâteloise de Presse. The Wolfrath family, owned by Express since 1814 , held 62 % of the share capital through their L'Express Communication Holding, PubliGroupe 28.5% and Marc Gassmann, publisher of the Journal du Jura and the Bieler Tagblatt , 9.5% of the share capital . In spring 2002, the Wolfrath family owned Express Communication Holding sold to the French Groupe France-Antilles (today: Groupe Hersant Média ). The competition commission approved the sale. An attempt by PubliGroupe and Marc Gassmann to invoke a right of first refusal for the 62% of Express Communication Holding was unsuccessful. Hersant then brought his stake in the two newspapers into the newly founded Groupe ESH Médias (Editions Suisses Holding SA).

L'Express covered the two Neuchâtel lake districts Boudry and Neuchâtel , the Val de Ruz and the Val de Travers as well as the former La Neuveville district in the Bernese Jura (today part of the Bernese Jura administrative district ).

Nicolas Willemin was editor-in-chief of the newspaper until March 2017, then Eric Lecluyse and, since June 1, 2017, Stéphane Devaux for the Montagnes-Jura department.

News portal

ArcInfo was founded in 2008 , the joint multimedia online platform of Express and Impartial as well as the regional TV station Canal Alpha , which publishes their editorial content. It has been paid for since 2010.

Historical archive

On the occasion of the newspaper's 275th anniversary in 2013, La Chaux-de-Fonds and the Swiss National Library, in collaboration with the Bibliothèque publique et universitaire de Neuchâtel, the Bibliothèque de la Ville, and financially supported by Loterie Romande and the Banque Cantonale Neuchâteloise digitized all editions since 1738 as well as all editions of Impartial since 1881 including text recognition and have since been made available online free of charge. The digitization work took five years and cost over CHF 5 million.
