L´uomo meccanico ( Italian : The Mechanical Man or The Machine Man ) is an Italian silent film in the genre of the science fiction film by André Deed from 1921. It is the first film in which robots fight each other . Other performance titles include The Mechanical Man ( USA) , O Homem Mecânico ( Brazil ) and Механический человек ( Russia ). In Germany the film was not listed. Only 26 minutes of the original 60-minute long film have survived and were restored in 1992.

A scientist has created a human-like automaton or robot that has enormous power and can move at great speed. With the help of a "televisor" the machine operator can be controlled remotely .

The scientist is killed by a gang of gangsters led by Mado who want to get their hands on the robot's blueprints. Before they can do this, the police arrest them . But Mado manages to escape: she injects herself a drug and is apparently seriously ill taken to a hospital ward. There she sets a fire and escapes in the chaos of the extinguishing work. She kidnaps the scientist's niece and forces her to deliver the plans to her, whereupon the gang leader can build the robot.

The robot controlled by Mado is used to carry out various crimes . Finally, the brother of the killed scientist succeeds in building a second robot that is used against the robot Mados. In the robot duel , which takes place in an opera house , the machine people destroy each other along with the building. Mado dies from a short circuit while giving orders to her robot .

Lore

The film was considered lost for decades . So far (as of 2018) no complete version has been identified. In particular, parts of the beginning of the film are missing. a. with the information on the cast, so that there are certain uncertainties in the assignment of actors / roles. In 1992, remnants of the film, which are in the Cinemateca Brasileira in São Paulo , were restored with the assistance of the Cineteca di Bologna and the Portuguese subtitles were replaced by Italian ones in a new copy . A DVD edition from Alpha Video with English subtitles is based on this copy . The length of the remnant is 740 meters (approx. 26 minutes playing time).
