The Sen'yū-ji ( Japanese 仙遊 寺 ) with the Go Sareizan (作 礼 山) and Senkōin (千 光 院) is a temple of Shingon Buddhism in the city of Imabari (Ehime Prefecture). It is located on the north side of the 294 m high Sareizan (作 礼 山) near the summit. In the traditional count, it is the 58th temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route .

history

The temple was built at the request of Emperor Tenji by Ochi Morioki (越 智 守 興), the most powerful prince in the Iyo province , in the second third of the 7th century. The main cult figure, a Kannon , is said to have been made by a dragon woman emerging from the sea with an ax and three prayers per stroke (一刀 三 礼, Ittō sanrei). This led to the Go “Sareizan”, for example “Temple made with prayer”.

The temple is said to have been created by the hermit Abō (阿 坊 仙人) over 40 years of work as a complete system (七 堂 伽藍, Shichidōgaran). In the year 718 he suddenly disappeared, but his work was honored in the name of the temple.

When priest Kūkai passed here on his pilgrimage in the 9th century, he healed the sick with the water of a spring that he had dug and rebuilt the dilapidated temple. In the Edo period , the temple fell into disrepair until, at the beginning of the Meiji period, priest Yūren (宥 蓮) rebuilt the temple with the support of numerous believers. Yuren died in 1871 Selbstmumifizierung ( Sokushinbutsu ), the last of this practice, which was then banned. A small stone pagoda ( Gorintō ) was built for him on the temple grounds.

The attachment

On the way to the temple you pass the temple gate, which is designed here as a Niō gate (仁王 門), i.e. as a gate with the two temple guards to the right and left of the passage. In addition to the main hall (本 堂, Hondō; 1) there is also the - here tiny - hall dedicated to the temple founder, the Daishidō (大師 堂; 2). Finally there is the enclosed spring with the healing water, which goes back to Kūkai.
