The Yokomine-ji (Japanese 横峰 寺) with the Go Ishizuchizan石 鈇 山 and Fukuchiin (福智 院) is a temple of the Omuro branch (御 室 派) of the Shingon direction of Buddhism in the city of Saijō (Ehime Prefecture). It is located at an altitude of 700 m below Ishizuchi, the highest mountain in Western Japan at 1980 m. In the traditional count, the temple is the 60th on the Shikoku pilgrimage.

history

According to tradition, En no Gyōja climbed the Ishizuchi in Hakuchi 2 (651). There the deity Zaō Gongen appeared to him under the starry sky , whose figure he carved out of the wood of the Shakunage and built a place of prayer for it.

In the Taitō era (806-810) the priest Kūkai visited the place. Zaō also appeared to him. Kūkai further expanded the temple, which to this day is facing both the Buddhist and the Shinto faith. At the beginning of the Meiji period , the facility was demolished, but rebuilt from 1909.

The attachment

The way to the temple leads over the slope of Ichizuchi. You pass the main gate (山門, Sammon) and finally reach the temple area. On the lower level there is the monks' quarters, on the higher level there is the main hall (本 堂, Hondō; 1 on the plan), a little higher next to it the bell tower (鐘楼, Shōrō; 3) and opposite the Daishidō, dedicated to the temple founder (大師 堂; 2 ). Next to it is the small pavilion Kangitendō (歓 喜 天堂; 4), also called Seitendō (聖 heil), for the holy Kangi.

A little further west is the Betsuin (別 院; 5), a small temple with an outbuilding.
