Plan of the temple (see text)

The Jōruri-ji ( Japanese 浄 瑠 璃 寺 ) with the Go Iōzan (医 王 山) and Yōjuin (養 珠 院) is a temple of the Buzan direction (豊 山 派) of Shingon Buddhism in the city of Matsuyama (Ehime Prefecture). In the traditional count it is the 46th temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route .

history

According to tradition, priest Gyōki is said to have passed here in the 1st year of Wadō (708) on the way to Nara , proclaimed the Buddha-doctrine and set up a temple complex. He is said to have carved the statue of Yakushi Nyorai from the white wood of the sandal tree , along with the companions Nikkō and Gekkō and the Twelve Heavenly Generals . The temple was named Jōruri-ji after the paradise land from which holy Yakushi descended .

A hundred years later, in 807, after returning from China , Priest Kūkai stopped by and restored the dilapidated temple. When at the end of the Muromachi period the sick general Hiraoka ( ilt 岡 道 倚 ) was healed after visiting the temple, he took care of the temple and its buildings.

In 1715 the temple burned down completely, only the cult figures could be saved. It was only 70 years later that the temple could be rebuilt with the help of the people in the area.

The attachment

You enter the temple from the east, climb a staircase and then pass the temple bell on the right (鐘楼, Shōrō 3). In front is the main hall (本 堂, Hondō; 1) and to the right of it the hall dedicated to the temple founder, the Daishidō (大師 堂; 2).

Chinese juniper trees stand on the spacious temple grounds , one of which is a thousand years old and is particularly venerated by pilgrims. In the south of the temple area there are several water basins with lotus plants. In the west there is a garden for wandering through, on whose beds small peonies are planted.
