The Kirihata-ji ( Japanese 切 幡 寺 ) with the Go Tokudosan (得 度 山) in Awa ( Tokushima Prefecture ) is a temple that belongs to the Kogi branch (古 義 派) of Shingon Buddhism. It is halfway up the Kannonyama with a view across the Yoshino Valley to Mount Koetsu. In the traditional count it is the tenth temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route .

history

The temple is said to have been founded by Kūkai in 815 (6th year of Konin ) . During the time of the north and south courtyards, a "grace pagoda" ( 利 生 塔 , Rishōtō) was built on the temple grounds at the request of Ashikaga Tadayoshi . Priest Yūhan ( 宥 範 ; 1270-1352) from the Zentsū-ji could be won over for the building supervision . It is said to have been the second after a grace pagoda in Kyoto.

The temple thrived under the Hosokawa , but was then destroyed during the Tenshō era (1573–1593) by Chōsokabe Motochika's troops when he invaded the province of Awa . The temple was rebuilt, but then fell victim to a fire in 1900 that destroyed most of the buildings. After that, it was gradually rebuilt for the third time.

The attachment

A long ascent leads to the temple grounds at 155 m above sea level. There are 333 stone steps to overcome. On the narrow area you then have the main hall (本 堂, Hondō; 1) in front of you. To the right of it are the Daishidō (大師 堂; 2), i.e. the hall dedicated to the temple founder, and the bell tower (鐘楼, Shōrō; 3). The higher situated Great Pagoda (大 塔, Daitō; 4) is registered as an important cultural asset . It was originally built as a western pagoda for the Sumiyoshitaishi-Jingūji (住 吉 大 社 神宮 寺) founded by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in Osaka . The first columns were erected in 1607 and the pagoda was finally completed in 1618.

When the separation of Buddhism and Shintoism ( Shinbutsu-Bunri ) was promoted in the early years of the Meiji period , this often led to the demolition of temple buildings under the sharper motto “ Haibutsu kishaku ”. When the place of prayer in Osaka was also affected, the Kirihata Temple acquired the pagoda to replace the lost pagoda of grace. The move began in 1873 and in 1882 it was completed at the new location. The pagoda has two floors. Usually the upper floor is then round, and the ensemble is called the Treasure Pagoda (多 宝塔, Tahōtō). Here, the upper floor is also angular, unique in all of Japan.

On the way to the pagoda you pass a small pavilion, which is dedicated to Fudōmyōō (不 動 堂; 5).
