Plan of the temple (see text)

The Kan'on-ji ( Japanese 観 音 寺 ) with the Go Kōyōzan ( 光耀 山 ) and Senjuin ( 千手 院 ) in Tokushima is a small temple that belongs to the Kōyasan branch ( 高 野山 派 ) of the Shingon direction of Buddhism. In the traditional count, it is the 16th temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route .

history

The temple is said to have been built by priest Kūkai around the year 816, who is said to have made a Kannon figure for him and as a companion the holy Fudō Myōō ( 不 動 明王 ) and the state protector Bishamon ( 毘 aus 天 ) from wood. During the armed conflict in the Tenshō era (1573–1592) the temple was destroyed.

In 1659 the temple was rebuilt at the present location at the request of the princes of Awa , the Hachisuka . - In 1913 the blind Takamatsu Inosuke ( 高 松伊 之 助 ) are said to have made a pilgrimage here with his parents, prayed and regained his sight. His stick is kept in the temple to this day.
