Plan of the temple (see text)

The Kumadani-ji ( Japanese 熊 谷 寺 ) with the Go Fumyōzan (普明 山) and Shinkōin (真 光 院) in Awa in Tokushima Prefecture is a temple that belongs to the Shingon direction of Buddhism. In the traditional count, it is the eighth temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route .

history

Priest Kūkai is said to have come to this area in the 6th year of Kōnin , i.e. 815, and to have built the temple in the rising mountain cut and given him a 5.5 cm high Kannon figure. In the Genroku period (1688–1704) there are said to have been many fires. And then in 1927 a fire destroyed the main hall and the cult figure. Reconstruction began in 1940, but was interrupted by the Pacific War. Completion took until 1972.

The attachment

At the bottom of the plain, far in front of the temple, there is the magnificent temple gate (山門, Sammon), which is executed here as a niōmon (仁王 門). It was built in 1687 as a 13.2 m high rōmon (楼門), i.e. as a (two-story) tower gate. It is one of Shikoku's most important tower gates . The pilgrimage route (参 道, Sandō) leads through towards the temple. You pass, still below, the mighty Treasure Pagoda (多 宝塔, Tahōtō) on the left. It was built in 1774 and is registered as an important cultural asset of the prefecture (hereinafter marked as KG ).

Then it goes up into the mountain until you pass the next temple gate, the Chūmon (中 門; 1; KG ), which leads to the actual temple area. It is designed as an eight-footed gate (八 脚 門, Hakkyakumon). You pass the bell tower (鐘楼, Shōrō; KG ) and take steps to reach the main hall (本 堂, Hondō; 2). Next to it on the left a steep staircase leads to the hall in which the temple founder is venerated, the Daishidō (大師 堂; 3). It was built in 1672, has a square floor plan and a pyramid roof and is covered with tiles (本 瓦 葺, Hongawarabuki). Inside is a shrine (厨子, Sushi; KG ), which probably dates from the 2nd half of the 17th century. There is also a seated wooden figure representing Kūkai. This figure ( KG ) is made from pieces of wood, is colored and has glass eyes.
