The Unpen-ji ( Japanese 雲 辺 寺 ), with the Go Kyogōzan (巨 鼇山) and Senjuin (千手 院) is a temple of the Shingon direction of Buddhism in Miyoshi ( Tokushima Prefecture ). Because of its high location - the temple is at 911 m slightly below the 927 m high Unpenjiyama - it is also called " Kōya of Shikoku " (四 国 高 野). Located directly on the border with Kagawa Prefecture , it can be reached from there by cable car.

In the traditional count, it is the 66th temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route . You climb up to it from the 65th temple, the Sankaku-ji in Aichi Prefecture , and descend from it to the 67th temple, the Daikō-ji , on a path that used to be called "Henro korogashi" (遍 路こ ろ が し) was called, for example, the “Stolper Pilgerweg”.

To the temple

Priest Kūkai is said to have visited this place three times: in Enreki 8 (789), when he was 16 years old and built a place of prayer, the second time in Daidō 2 (807), when he was 34 and built the temple, and in Year Konin 8 (818) with 45 years. He is said to have made the cult figures at the request of the Emperor Saga . During the civil war in the Tenshō era (1573–1592), General Chōsokabe Motochika resided in this area and came to the temple for prayer. - The temple had an eventful history until it received continuous support from the Hachisuka princes from the Edo period .

The attachment

The temple consists of several building complexes. One of the temple gates is designed as a Niō gate (仁王 門), i.e. as a gate whose passage is flanked by temple guards. The main hall (本 堂, Hondō) is a new building from recent years. There is also the hall in memory of the temple founder, the Daishidō (大師 堂). Behind her is another hall, the "Rear Daishidō" (大師 堂奥 殿, Daishdō Okuden).

Treasures

A thousand-armed, seated Kannon (木造 千手 観 音 坐像, Mokuzō senshu Kannon zazō) made of wood by priest Kyōjin (経 尋) is worshiped. It is registered as an Important Cultural Asset of Japan . Another important cultural asset is a standing Bishamonten made of wood (木造 毘 沙門 天 立 像, Mokuzō Bishamon-ten ritsuzō).
