history

In 807, Tomosuke (朝 祐), the son of Prince Dōryū, is said to have returned from China, whereupon Priest Kūkai made a 90 cm high figure of the healing Buddha, Yakushi Nyorai, at his request. In this figure he put a picture of his father. Tomosuke, who succeeded Kūkai, was also the one who built a large temple in memory of his father and named it after him. His successor, Priest Shinga (真 雅; 801-879), built 23 Klausen, the 4th abbot Enchin (円 珍) created the figures of the 5 Great Heavenly Kings (五大 明王, Godaimyōō) and the Kannon for the newly built Gomadō . Other great personalities followed, then during the Mange era (976–978) a great earthquake destroyed many buildings, in 1060 the temple burned down during armed conflicts. This was repeated once again during the Tenshō era (1573–1592). - However, the temple survived all calamities and was preserved.
