Shusshaka-ji
The Shusshaka-ji ( Japanese 出 釈 迦 寺 ) with the Go Gahaishisan (我 拝 師 山) and Kyūmoji (求 聞 待 院) is a temple of the Shingon Buddhism in Zentsūji ( Kagawa Prefecture ). It is located on a hill below the 481 m high Gahaishisan, which gave the temple its name. In the traditional count, it is the 73rd temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route .
history
It is reported that when priest Kūkai was 7 years old and was called “Mana” (真 魚), he climbed Gahaishi Mountain. There he is said to have shouted, “I want to learn Buddhism in order to help all people. If this wish should come true, the Buddha will appear before me. I will throw myself from the cliffs of the mountain to surrender to Buddha. ”As he jumped down, Buddha and angels in plumage came on a cloud and caught him. Later, Kūkai created the figure of Saint Kokuuzō (ō 蔵 菩薩) on the mountain.
investment
The temple gate can be reached via its steep staircase in the north (山門, Sammon, 1). The hill is occupied by the monks' quarters on the right. Opposite you are three buildings with pyramid roofs: in the middle the main hall (本 堂, Hondō, 2), to the right the hall dedicated to the temple founder, the Daishidō (大師 堂, 3). On the left, a little further away and higher up, is the little Jizōdo (地 蔵 堂, 4), the pavilion dedicated to the holy Jizō , protector of children.
The place where Kūkai fell is high above the temple on the Gahaishi and is called “Shashigadake” (捨身 ヶ 嶽), which means something like “suicide cliff”.
Treasures
In the main hall, the figure of the Shaka Buddha made by Kūkai with his companions, the Fudō Myōō (不 動 明王) and Kokuuzō Bosatsu, is venerated.
