Plan of the temple (see text)

The Byōdō-ji ( Japanese 平等 寺 ) with the Go Hakusuizan ( 白水 山 ) and Iōin ( 医 王 院 ) in the city of Anan ( Tokushima Prefecture ) is a temple that belongs to Shingon Buddhism . It lies on the southern slope of a mountain range and in front of a river. In the traditional count it is the 22nd temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route .

history

As Priest Kūkai wandered through this area, a five-colored cloud appeared to him in which golden Sanskrit characters lit up. Then the healing Buddha (Yakushi nyorai) appeared to him. When Kūkai immediately wanted healing water ( 加 持 水 , Kajimizu) and opened a spring with his pilgrim's staff, milk-white water came out. 100 days later, Kūkai carved a Yakushi as the main character. The white water ( 白水 ) became the go for the temple.

investment

You enter the temple through the temple gate ( 山門 , Sammon; 1 in the plan), which is designed here as a tower gate . Then you have the monk's area on the right side, on the street side of which there is an elongated building (P) for the reception of pilgrims.

A long staircase leads up to the main hall ( 本 堂 , Hondō) on the edge of the forest . It was rebuilt in 1722, its mighty roof is designed as a kind of apron roof ( 錣 葺 き , Shigoru-buki). The compartments in the ceiling ( 格 間 , Gōma) and the small supporting arches ( 蟇 股 , Kaerumata) are painted with pictures of flowers. Above is also the hall dedicated to the temple founder, the Daishidō ( 大師 堂 ; 3).

Treasures

In the abbey residence, four wooden sliding doors are covered with autumn pictures on paper ( 紙 本金 地 著色 秋草 図 ; Shihonkonji chakushoku jūsō-zu). The signatures and the style of painting suggest that Kanō Naizen (father) was involved. It is unclear how the doors got into this temple.
