The Negoro-ji ( Japanese 根 香 寺 ) with the Go Aominezan (青 峯山) in the city of Takamatsu ( Kagawa Prefecture ) is a temple of the Tendai direction of Buddhism. In the traditional count it is the 82nd temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route .

history

Priest Kūkai found that the Aomine (青峰), one of the main peaks of Goshikidai (五色 台), was well suited for a place of worship of esoteric Buddhism. He founded a temple there, which he called "Kazōin" (花 蔵 院). Later, his nephew Enchin (円 珍; 814-891) visited the temple and made a thousand-armed Kannon (千手 観 音, Senjū Kannon) from the wood he had found in the Lotus Valley (蓮華 谷, Rengedani) and built the Senjūin (千 十 院). Both institutions together came to be called Negoro temples. Emperor Shirakawa sponsored the temple, later it was the princes of Takamatsu. At that time, the temple came to the Tendai direction of Buddhism.

The attachment

The Tempe, which is surrounded by forest, can be reached through the temple gate (山門, Sammon; 1), here designed as a "Two Holy Gate" (仁王 門, Niōmon). Via a staircase that is more than 100 m long and divided into sections, you pass the monks' quarters with the guest house on the left. On the right is the bell tower (鐘楼, Shōrō; 5), then there is the memorial hall for the temple founder (大師 堂, Daishidō; 4). In front of the last steps there is a corridor [3] in which 33,000 small Kannon figures are set up. The main hall can be reached via the inner courtyard (本 堂, Hondō; 2).

In front of the temple there is the "cow devil" (牛 鬼, Ushi-oni; 6). It is named after its horned beef head.

Remarks

  1. The sacred five (五大 明王, Godaimyōō) are Fudō Myōō (不 動 明王), Gōzanse Myōō (降 三世 明王), Gundari Myōō (軍 茶 利明 王), Daiitoku Myōō (大 威 徳 明王) and Kongō Y金剛 夜叉ō ( ). They are set up here in their own small hall, the “Godaimyōōdō” (五大 明王 堂).
  2. At the time when Enchin was busy founding the temple, Sannō Gongen (山 王 権 現) appeared under this tree. A white monkey jumped down and protected Enchin so that he could finish the temple. This is what tradition says. The age of this Zelkovie is estimated at 1600 years, the tree circumference is about 7 m. The tree died around 1975, in 1991 the tree was felled and the stump was protected by a roof.
