The Hanta-ji ( Japanese 繁多 寺 ) with the Go Higashiyama (東山) and Rurikōin (瑠 璃 光 院) is a temple of the Buzan direction (豊 山 派) of Shingon Buddhism in the city of Matsuyama (Ehime Prefecture). In the traditional count, it is the 50th temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route .

history

According to tradition, the temple was created by priest Gyōki at the request of Empress Kōken during her reign from 749 to 785 . He made a 90 cm high statue of the healing Buddha Yakushi ( 薬 師 如 来 ) and built a place of prayer for him, which he called Kōmyōji ( 光明 寺 ). When during the Kōnin era (810-824) priest Kūkai stayed here on his pilgrimage through Shikoku , he named the temple "Higashiyama" and "Hanka-ji".

Then the temple fell into disrepair until the commissioner of Iyo, Minamoto no Yoriyoshi ( 源 頼 義 , 988-1075), the priest Gyōren ( 堯 蓮 ) and others took care of it and rebuilt it. Later, priest Itsupen ( 一遍 ; 1239–1289) visited the temple as a young monk, coming from Dazaifu . - In the Edo period , the 4th Shogun, Tokugawa Ietsuna , worshiped the holy Kangites ( 歓 喜 天 ). In its heyday the temple had 34 Klausen and 100 sub-temples.

The attachment

You enter the temple complex from the west through the Niō gate (仁王 門; 5), i.e. a gate that offers space for the two temple guards to the right and left of the passage. After crossing the whole complex you are in front of the main hall (本 堂, Hondō; 1), to which a staircase leads up. At the top you pass the newly built bell frame (鐘楼, Shōrō; 4), the coffered ceiling of which is painted in the old style under the compartment. To the right of the main hall is the hall dedicated to the temple founder, the Daishidō (大師 堂; 2).

A special feature is the existing hall for the holy Kangi (歓 喜 天堂; 3) in the north of the temple complex. On the way to it one comes through a torii (marked in yellow on the map), which usually indicates a Shinto shrine .
