The Hōrin-ji ( Japanese 法輪 寺 ) with the Go Shōkakusan (正 覚 山) and Bodaiin ( 菩提院) in Awa ( Tokushima Prefecture ) is a temple of the Kōyasan direction (高 野山 派) of Shingon Buddhism. In the traditional count, it is the ninth temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route .

history

The foundation of the temple is said to go back to Kūkai , who came to this area in the year Kōnin 6 (815) and saw a white snake ( 白蛇 ). Since white snakes play a role in Buddhism, Kūkai carved the Buddha entering nirvana ( 涅槃 , Nehan), who has since been venerated in the temple. The temple was originally called "Hakujasan Hōrinji" ( 白蛇 山 法 林寺 ). It was 4 km further north and was large. In 1582 the facility was burned down by soldiers from Chōsokabe Motochika .

The temple was rebuilt in the Shōhō era (1644-1648). In 1859 a fire broke out that destroyed the temple again except for the bell tower. During the Meiji period , the temple was rebuilt in its current location. In 1882, Emperor Meiji visited the temple.

The attachment

You enter the temple from the east through the temple gate (山門, Sammon; 1), which is designed as a tower gate and shows a temple guard at the bottom right and left. It is therefore also known as the Niō Gate (仁王 門). Ahead you can see the main hall (本 堂, Hondō; 2), to the right of it the Daishidō (大師 堂; 3), the hall that is dedicated to the temple founder.

Remarks

  1. During a dry period, Kūkai is said to have started washing azukibohen with some water in front of the depressed farmers . The water increased in a miraculous way, which helped the farmers. Kūkai was then called "Bean-washing High Priest" (小豆 洗 い 大師, Azukiarai Daishi).
