The Shido-ji ( Japanese 志 度 寺 ) with the Go Fudarakusan ( 補 陀 落山 ) and Shōjōkōin (清浄 光 院) is a temple of the Shingon direction of Buddhism in the city of Sanuki in the Kagawa Prefecture . It is the 86th temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route .

history

On the basis of old roof tiles that were found on the temple grounds, one can conclude that the temple was founded towards the end of the Heian period . It is the area where the Taira became involved in fighting after the Battle of Yashima in March 1185, also in Shido, before moving westward.

The attachment

The temple gate is designed as a Niō gate ( 仁王 門 ; 1), i.e. as a gate with the figures of the temple guards to the right and left of the passage. It was the first Prince ( Daimyō ) of Takamatsu han , Matsudaira Yorishige ( 松平頼重 ; 1622-1695), donated. It was built in 1670 and is one of the structures whose construction time is precisely known. The gate is designed as an "eight-pillar gate" ( 八 脚 門 , Hakkyaku-mon ), whereby the very massive pillars are in the tradition of Shingon. The two temple guards ( 金剛 力士 , Kongōrikishi ) are registered as a cultural asset of the prefecture. They come from the Kamakura period and are typical of it.

The main hall ( 本 堂 , Hondō ; 3) was also donated by Matsudaira Yorishige in 1670, as evidenced by a leaf in the roof beams. It stands on massive pillars and is relatively wide to the depth, as was customary in ancient temples. It is registered as an Important Cultural Property of Japan (hereinafter marked with Folgenden). Connected to the main hall is the Daishidō (大師 堂; 4), the hall in which the temple founder is venerated.

The five-story pagoda ( 五 重 塔 , Gojū-no-tō ; 2) was built between 1971 and 1973 as a gift from a local entrepreneur. - Other buildings are the Emma Hall ( 閻 魔 堂 , -dō ; 5) next to the main hall and the Datsueba Hall ( 奪 衣 婆 堂 , -dō ; 6) next to the pagoda. Their names identify them as places of worship for the deceased.

The garden of the abbey (G) dates from the 20th century in its present form. It bears the name “Musentei” (無 染 庭), which means something like “Uncolored Garden”, and its design is based on the classic changing garden . The spring (Q) in the garden bears the name “Otsuji no ido” (お 辻 の 井 戸), that is, “the source of the Otsuji”, that is, a woman with whose fate she is connected.

Treasures of the temple

The main hall is also called the Kannon Hall ( 観 音 堂 ), as an eleven-faced Kannon ( 十 一面 観 音 , Jūichimen Kannon ; ◎) flanked by two protectors, namely the saints Fudomyōō ( 不 動 明王 ) and Bishamonten ( 毘 沙門 天 ), is venerated. This trinity comes from temple complexes on Mount Hiei . The group dates from the end of the 12th century, i.e. from the time the temple was founded. The temple still has a Buddhist figure, which is registered as a cultural asset of the prefecture. The shape of the body points to the middle Heian period, but that of the head to the Muromachi period .

As the additional name Fudaraku-san suggests, the focus here is on the worship of the Kannon. An eleven-headed Kannon ( 絹本 着色 十 一面 観 音像 , Kembon chakushoku juichimen kannon-zo ; ◎) painted in color on silk is also in the possession of the temple.

In addition to pictures, the temple also has the "Founding History of the Shido Temple" ( 絹本 着色 志 度 寺 縁 起 , Kembon chakushoku Shidoji engi ; ◎) painted on silk , the writing of which can be determined between 1317 and 1343 based on the dates in the document . Among the seven stories in the text there is also the one of the (shell) diver who finds jewelry ( 海 女 , Ama ), who became the template for the song “Die Taucherin”.
