La Zouche (noble family)

La Zouche is the name of an English noble family, a branch line of the Breton noble family Rohan , which has been recorded in England from 1172 and died out in 1799.

The family was founded by Alan de la Zouche († 1190). His last name goes back to La Coche, an area in Brittany between Nantes and Pornic . He was the son of the Breton nobleman Geoffroy, Vice Count of Porhoët and brother of Eudon II. De Porhoët , Duke of Brittany . During the reign of King Henry II , probably around 1172, he moved from Brittany to England. His son Roger († 1238) had three sons, of which the older Alan de la Zouche († 1270) founded the main line in Ashby in Yorkshire . His younger brother Eudo de la Zouche († 1279) founded the branch of the family living in Harringworth in Northamptonshire . Members of both branches of the family were appointed to the royal parliament by Writ of Summons and thus elevated to Baron Zouche . Descendants in the female line still carry this baron title today.
