Lacon is on the east bank of the Illinois River , a tributary of the Mississippi River .
The Illinois State Route 17 runs through Lacon in an east-west direction and leaves the city west over the river bridge. Illinois State Route 26 intersects downtown .
Lacon is 100 miles south to Springfield , the capital of Illinois. The Quad Cities are 152 km to the west-northwest, Chicago is 209 km to the northeast.
